Wrongful Termination
Although NC is an “at will” employment state, it is still illegal to terminate an employee because of a discriminatory reason. This includes discrimination based on race, national origin, religion, disability, age, and gender:

Unemployment Benefits
After termination or lay off, you can and should apply for unemployment benefits if you have been terminated due to no fault of your own. The employer must prove “misconduct” or a violation of a company policy. If the employer is unable to prove you did something wrong, you may get your unemployment benefits. DID YOU QUIT OR WALK OFF THE JOB! If so, there may be PROBLEMS.

Unpaid leave from work due to a serious medical condition. Serious medical conditions include family issues like childbirth and adoption; as well as individual sickness like cancer, surgery and personal injury accidents, You cannot be terminated or demoted while out on FMLA leave, but there are LOOPHOLES.
